Fresh, local berries

Do you want some fresh, local strawberries, raspberries, or tayberries? Then Biringer Farms is the place to be! Located in North Everett this is a great family outing! They have u-pick, buy by the flat, or sliced strawberries with sugar already added. This is perfect timing for some 4th of July bbq's, just pick up some shortcake and and you're good to go! I'm actually going tomorrow with my boys and some friends. I'll post a comment to tell you how it was!

Being Green Pays!

Grocery_tote_2 Everyone has seen the reusable grocery bags. They are everywhere! Even Costco and JC Penny have them, which is kind of strange, but still these bags are everywhere!

I do my grocery shopping at Fred Meyer and they will give me money back for using a reusable grocery bag. Every bag I use I get a credit of of five cents each time I I use it. So in the end, the bag pays for its self and I could end up making money off this bag!

You can make your own "grocery totes" there are free patterns everywhere. My friend has a etsy store and has sold a few grocery totes with really cool fabric to have more personality. I was kind of lazy and took a Fred Meyer bag and then sewed a piece of scrap fabric over the center section. I love Fred Meyer, don't get me wrong, but I don't need to be a walking advertisement for them.

I use my "personalized" grocery bag more than I thought I would. When we travel I put all our car snacks and must haves in there. It's great and thing don't roll out all over the back seat!

New Cell Phone Law While Driving

Effective July 1st, 2008 it will be illegal to talk on your hand held cell phone while driving in teh state of Washington. The good news is it's only a secondary offense, for now. What that means is the police can't pull you over just for talking on your hand held cell phone but if you are breaking another law while talking on your hand held cell phone they can give you a ticket for your cell phone too. To read the actual law click here.

Basically they are pushing us towards using handsfree headsets which is good because I need more electronic equipment in my house! I don't have a hands free device but I sure hope they are generic and will accomodate any cell phone. I'm tired of having to buy new car chargers and wall chargers every time I get a new phone!

Useless Trivia

Wd40 My radio station plays this game every morning where the guys ask the girls a guy question and vice versa. Today's question for the girls was "what does WD-40 stand for?" Normally I don't care but I always think it's interesting to hear where names come from.

WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed WD-40 back in 1953. The chemist persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try.

WD-40 also has a indefinate shelf life, it never goes bad! Totally random but now you know!

PS: I was so proud I knew this usless piece of trivia so I wanted to wow Dave with my trivia! So I asked him what WD-40 stood for and HE KNEW THE ANSWER! Dave never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge!

Family Fun at Jump Planet

Jump_planet_3  With school out for the summer kids are going to need something to burn off some energy! If you've even seen a inflatable bouncy house imagine a whole warehouse full of bouncy houses and you have Jump Planet!

Located in North Bothell Jump Planet is tucked away in a business complex and is a huge building with 11 inflatables for kids to run and jump! It's pretty inexpensive ($6.00 for the first child and $4.00 for a sibling) for a hour or so of fun. The adults get to play for free! They are only open at certain times so make sure you plan ahead but they do a Monday night jump so the whole family can attend.

Jump Planet is clean, plus they divide the play times up by age, they have staff that roam to ensure the rules are being enforced, fun music playing, and it's just fun! Click here for the link to their site and schedule.

Hold the Tomato

Tomatoes3 If you've noticed tomatoes missing from the grocery stores or your meals at restaurants lately there's a reason. Salmonella has been detected in raw red roma, red plum, and round red tomatoes and several restaurants and grocery stores have stopped using and selling those varities. Apparently grape, cherry and tomatoes still attached to the vine are ok.

It kind of messes up my plans for tacos on wednesday night but I'd rather be safe than sorry! Click here for the cnn.com article for more info.

Summer Projects

Summer in the Northwest is when our state shines! It's when the natural beauty is at it's best, the sun is shining, the rain has stopped, and our yards look the best! Summer is always a popular time for houses to come on the market because they look their best too. Summer is the best time to work on outdoor projects.

This year my family has decided to redo our back deck. The old deck was nothing to speak of but my biggest complaint was when you sat down you couldn't enjoy our back yard because all you could see was the railing. I took the kids away for a week and my husband went to town revamping the deck (in the rain no less!). I'm sure the neighbors weren't happy at the late night hammering but it had to be done!

My husband did A LOT of research on decks, building code, materials, and the overall design. I love that he is a planner! So make sure you get all the required permits, applications, and most important the "Call before you dig" people if you are doing any remodeling this summer.

How To Find More Gas Money

I'm heading out on vacation soon and will be driving to Southern Oregon to visit family. I'm expecting to drive about 1200 miles round trip and get 20 miles a gallon or so in my SUV so that's about $240 in gas at $4.00 a gallon. When my twins were born 4 years ago we did this same trip and gas was $2.25 a gallon, so it cost us $135.00 in the same car! That's a big difference! Here's how we've budgeted for this trip:

  1. Plan meals. We go to the grocery store 1x a week with a planned menu so we buy only what we need and utilize leftover ingredients (homemade pizza with the leftover sauce from lasagna, enchiladas with the leftover tortillas from taco night). This helps us to stay on our grocery budget.
  2. Avoid useless errands. If you can combine your errands into one afternoon you'll save time and gas! Or try and utilize one stop shopping, that's why I love Fred Meyer. I can get my prescriptions, groceries, and birthday presents at one store instead of three.
  3. Stop eating out! Especially at lunchtime. Take some leftovers or a sandwich.
  4. Cut back on the coffee! This one is hard, especially for me! Coffee is a luxury not a necessity! Try getting a smaller size or going every other day, or going to a small local stand. At Starbucks a tall vanilla latte is $3.10 with tax but my local coffee stand is only $2.50 plus they have double stamp day there. This is small but it all adds up! Or better yet, brew your coffee at home!
  5. Use coupons! I don't go out of my way to find a coupon but when I go grocery shopping I always look at the Fred Meyer flyer, I look in the Sunday paper for coupons, I use our Entertainment book, and I use my rewards card. It all adds up over time!

If I gave up coffee for 77 days I could pay for the gas for my vacation! Now that's not going to happen but it has made me cut back.
